Happy Autumnal Equinox to everyone! Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA but yeeeeesh things have been so busy. But I’m back and ready to horroritupinhere.
What a perfect day to announce the October reads and think ahead to all of the cool [hopefully LITERALLY ’cause whyyyyy isn’t it sweater weather yet?] things happening during the most spookiest of months. I’ll have a separate post about Athens area events that might interest y’all and you can let me know what I’ve missed or should add. Promote anything you have going on too!

Main Book: Something This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
You asked for some classic horror and here some for ya!
This one’s about two 13-year-old best friends, Jim Nightshade and William Halloway, and their nightmarish experience with a traveling carnival that comes to their Midwestern home, Green Town, Illinois. A demonic proprietor preys on the fears of the townsfolk while the circus lights bleed onto swirling autumn leaves. Interesting characters, very atmospheric and the basis for Stephen King’s novel Needful Things.
There’s also a feature film from 1983 that scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid! I know, I know. I’m old! But really, Disney had some terrifying children’s movie for us Gen X folks.
Secondary Book|Novella: Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge takes place during Halloween when an entity known as The October Boy terrorizes a small town. Uh, yes please. This one won the Bram Stoker Award!
Graphic Novel|Manga: Wytches by Scott Snyder and Jock shakes up classic lore with witches becoming bestial, primal creatures that live deep in the woods. Natural magic, sacrifices, muted colors and slow dread all work together to create a highly lauded first project by this group of writers/artists.
Comic: Ice Cream Man by W. Maxwell Prince. Chocolate, vanilla, existential horror, drug addiction, musical fantasy…there’s a flavor for everyone’s misery. ICE CREAM MAN is a genre-defying comic book series featuring disparate ‘one-shot’ tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each installment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colorful truck, is the Ice Cream Man-a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who, with a snap of his fingers-lickety split
-can change the course of your life forever. Let’s continue this one!
