After a gooey, gory and graphic August read, it seems like everyone wanted a change of pace with some less violent fare. I think The Troop was the perfect choice for the month and it wasn’t my usual pick but I’m glad I branched out a bit even if it made my stomach churn!
But let’s shift to September and chat about those choices.
Main Book: Play Nice by Rachel Harrison
A woman must confront the demons of her past when she attempts to fix up her childhood home in this devilishly clever take on the haunted house.
This one is from 2025 and spent some time of the NYT Bestseller list. Harrison is known for sarcastic wit and for approaching emotional trauma with a direct and sometimes comedic approach.

Secondary Book|Novella: The Annual Migration of Clouds by Premee Mohamed The world is nothing like it once was: climate disasters have wracked the continent, causing food shortages, ending industry, and leaving little behind. Then came Cad, mysterious mind-altering fungi that invade the bodies of the now scattered citizenry. Reid, a young woman who carries this parasite, has been given a chance to get away — to move to one of the last remnants of pre-disaster society — but she can’t bring herself to abandon her mother and the community that relies on her. When she’s offered a coveted place on a dangerous and profitable mission, she jumps at the opportunity to set her family up for life, but how can Reid ask people to put their trust in her when she can’t even trust her own mind?
Graphic Novel|Manga: Uzamaki written and illustrated by Junji Ito. This is one of the most recommended reads we had via submissions! Serialized from 1998 to 1999, the story follows the cursed coastal town of Kurouzu-cho, which becomes slowly consumed and driven mad by an obsession with spiral patterns. It’s been a tv series and a movie so you can always goes visual that way!
We’re going to start with it for September and if folks want to carry it through October then we will do that…
Comic: Ice Cream Man by W. Maxwell Prince. Chocolate, vanilla, existential horror, drug addiction, musical fantasy…there’s a flavor for everyone’s misery. ICE CREAM MAN is a genre-defying comic book series featuring disparate ‘one-shot’ tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each installment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colorful truck, is the Ice Cream Man-a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who, with a snap of his fingers-lickety split
-can change the course of your life forever.
Like Uzamaki above, we’re going to start with it for September and if folks want to carry it through October then we will do that…
RecRoom will have copies of all of these but Ice Cream Man. There will be only one Uzamaki due to it being a larger bound edition and Ice Cream Man can be ordered by single issues. I always suggest supporting local and for utilizing the PINES system. If you have an extra copy of any of these that you’d be willing to loan then please let me know and we can get a RIP Lending Library setup!

Horror news: The passing of icon Reggie Bannister. If you’ve never seen Phantasm then give it a look. It makes no sense but it’s a lot of fun and Reggie is a badass.
